Waterskiing Lessons – Junior Development Summer 2022

Junior Development is back in a different form this summer. Our Junior Development program (JD) is designed for kids 4 – 18 years old.

We teach weekly lesson from our clubhouse dock on Pomona Lake. Lessons will begin on Thursday June 16th. Lesson’s will be from 6 p.m. to dark. There will be 10 weeks of lessons. Attend all ten weeks for $100 or pick and choose weeks , come as you like for $15 a week. Our last lesson will be August 11th.

We will be having some guest instructors. Jim Stout will be teaching Slalom and Trick Skiing. Brit Hunsicker will be teaching wakeboard and wake surf. Mike Frack will be teaching wakeboard, barefoot and all around skiing. Also instructing and driving this summer will be Matthew Seymour, Josh Underwood, Sean Powell, Lynn Underwood and Mark Weber.

You must be a member of USA Waterski for insurance purposes. You may come to 2 JD classes and pay the nightly fee to USA for insurance ($8), but after 2 classes you must join USA Waterski. USA Waterski, Grassroots membership start at $40 a year per individual. You also must be a PLSC member. Individual PLSC memberships are $40 per year and family memberships are $50.

Regardless of the child’s skiing or athletic ability or lack of ability, our instructors will teach them the fundamentals of safe waterskiing. The club will provide the boat, and the equipment, skis, boards, ropes etc. The student need only bring a drink and a towel, sunscreen is advised too. If you have a life vest for your child please bring it. You may want to go and purchase one to fit your child if they don’t have one. The club has a selection of vests, but we encourage you to get your own well fitted vest. Your child must be able to swim.

Our beginners will start on the boom. This is a teaching device that allows for more mistakes while learning to get up. From the boom a student can progress to a short rope and finally to the 75ft rope behind the boat. We will start with skiing, then progress to wakeboarding, and kneeboarding and finally slalom skiing. For advanced and confident skiers barefooting is possible when your instructor feels you are ready.

A boat normally will hold up to 4 skiers at one session. Our drivers are all veteran waterskiers and drivers. Most times we will work with 2 adults in the boat, a coach and a driver. Safety is always our concern and we monitor the weather each and every time we go out. In the event of watches and warnings a class may be cancelled, should severe weather be eminent. We will alert you ahead of time should we have to cancel a class.

For Parents There are 10 weeks of lessons. Every Saturday from June to August. You will be required to fill out a USA Waterski minor’s waiver and medical form before your child is allowed to ski. We do not provide any additional insurance for your child while they are on the boat. You are welcome to come and watch from our dock or shore. We have a large clubhouse with Kitchen, restrooms and showers. You are welcome to use our facilities. We have a no alcohol policy while JD is happening. If your child has a cell phone please don’t let them bring it on the boat. We’ve seen too many go into the lake. We encourage you to bring a dry set of clothes for the ride home. z

The club is actively looking for members. We find that many of our parents join the club and ski on a much more regular basis. Many of the kids perform in our shows. You will have the ability to use the jump and slalom course after you join as a full member. You will also have full access to use our equipment when you are on Pomona Lake.

If your child is a Scout, they will have the ability to earn several different merit badges, one being waterskiing. These lessons are limited spaces, so get your registration in early. First come first served. The Tentative dates for the lessons are 6/16, 6/22, 6/30, 7/7, 7/14, 7/21, 7/28, 8/4 and 8/11.
